Not only build reciprocal links but there are also some other ways to get one way link for site.

As you mentioned, If a person who is newbie in SEO then he can do some various things like Directory Submission, Article Submission, Press Release Submission after getting some experience he can also do some other things like Social Bookmarking, Forum Posting, Blog Posting and etc. using these all techniques site will get good rank and visitors also.
