Why My rank goes up and down?

My website, for me, says its ranked #4 for the keyword best myspace layouts, but i goes up and down a lot, sometimes to the first result on second page.

Why does it do this, because the other sites are updating and adding more content or what? How can I get mine to the top and keep it there.

That's right keep update your site's with relevant content and doing off page continues to stay on your rank and also get improvement also. But if you stop your off page work then definitely you rank will be gone down.
